Antilope americana was named by Ord (1815). It is extant. It is the type species of Antilocapra.
It was recombined as Capra americana by Richardson (1829), Richardson (1854); it was recombined as Antilocapra americana by Ord (1818), Hay (1902), Matthew (1904), Elftman (1931), Schultz and Howard (1935), Kurten and Anderson (1980), Agnarsson and May-Collado (2008).
