Bananogmius crieleyi was named by Applegate (1970). It is not a trace fossil. Its type locality is G. S. Moore Farm, which is in a Santonian carbonate limestone in Alabama.
It was recombined as Pentanogmius crieleyi by Taverne (2001) and Taverne (2004).
