Taxonomy
Cetotherium maicopicum was named by Spasski (1951) [Lectotype designated by Tarasenko & Lopatin 2012, PIN 764/1, incomplete skull]. Its type specimen is IBP S144, S131, S142, S154, S125, S126, S128, S130, a partial skeleton, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is River Belaia, which is in a Sarmatian lacustrine lime mudstone in the Russian Federation.
It was recombined as Kurdalagonus maicopicus by Tarasenko and Lopatin (2012); it was recombined as Kurdalagonus maicopicum by Goldin and Startsev (2014); it was considered an invalid subgroup of Chaeomysticeti by Goldin and Startsev (2017).
