Taxonomy

Archaeotherium mortoni was named by Leidy (1850) [genotype].

It was recombined as Entelodon mortoni by Leidy (1853); it was recombined as Elotherium mortoni by Leidy (1857), Leidy (1873) and Hay (1902).

Synonyms

Archaeotherium robustum was named by Leidy (1852).

It was synonymized subjectively with Entelodon mortoni by Leidy (1857); it was synonymized subjectively with Archaeotherium mortoni by Troxell (1920), Sinclair (1922), Scott (1940) and Foss and Fremd (1998).
Arctodon vetustum was named by Leidy (1852) [Misspelled as Autodon vetustum in the same reference]. It is the type species of Arctodon.

It was synonymized subjectively with Archaeotherium mortoni by Scott (1940).
Elotherium clavum was named by Marsh (1893).

It was recombined as Archaeotherium clavus by Troxell (1920) and Troxell (1920); it was synonymized subjectively with Archaeotherium mortoni by Peterson (1909), Sinclair (1922), Scott (1940) and Effinger (1998).
Rhinoceros americanus was named by Leidy (1852).

It was recombined as Eotherium americanum by Leidy (1853); it was synonymized subjectively with Titanotherium proutii by Leidy (1857); it was recombined as Menodus americanus by Cope (1891); it was synonymized subjectively with Megacerops coloradensis by Hay (1902); it was considered a nomen dubium by Osborn (1929); it was synonymized subjectively with Archaeotherium mortoni by Scott (1940).
