Taxonomy
Pterodactylus sedgwickii was named by Owen (1859). Its type specimen is CAMSM B54.422, a partial skull (Rostrum), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Cambridge Greensand [non-specific locality data], which is in an Albian open shallow subtidal marl in the West Melbury Marly Chalk Formation of the United Kingdom.

It was recombined as Ptenodactylus sedgwickii by Seeley (1869); it was recombined as Ornithocheirus sedgwickii by Seeley (1870); it was recombined as Coloborhynchus sedgwickii by Owen (1874), Unwin (2001), Unwin (2003), Martill and Unwin (2011); it was recombined as Camposipterus sedgwickii by Rodrigues and Kellner (2013); it was recombined as Aerodraco sedgwickii by Holgado and Pegas (2020).
