Proetus talenti was named by Chatterton (1971).

It was recombined as Gerastos (Devonoproetus) talenti by Lütke (1990); it was recombined as Proetus (Devonoproetus) talenti by Feist and Talent (2000); it was recombined as Devonoproetus talenti by Lerosey-Aubril and Feist (2005), Basse et al. (2016), Lemke (2020).
