Ophiobyrsinae was named by Matsumoto (1915). It is extant.

It was reranked as the family Ophiobyrsidae by O'Hara et al. (2018).

It was assigned to Ophiomyxidae by Matsumoto (1915) and Spencer and Wright (1966); to Ophiuroidea by Storc (2004); to Ophiuridea by Smith et al. (1995), Jagt (2000) and Storc and Zitt (2008); and to Ophiacanthina by O'Hara et al. (2018).
