Jugalicyathus was named by Gravestock (1984) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm Boto-l]. Its type is Jugalicyathus tardus. It is the type genus of Jugalicyathidae.
It was assigned to Archaeocyathida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Jugalicyathidae by Debrenne et al. (2015).
