Brachylagus browni was named by Hay (1921). Its type locality is Anita, which is in an Irvingtonian terrestrial horizon in Arizona.
It was recombined as Hypolagus browni by Dice (1929), Dawson (1958), Kurten and Anderson (1980); it was recombined as Alilepus browni by White (1991).
