Taxonomy
Phenacodus macropternus was named by Cope (1882). Its type specimen is AMNH 4395, a set of teeth (R M1-2), and it is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Bunophorus macropternus by Sinclair (1914), Gazin (1952), Kelley and Wood (1954), Guthrie (1967), Stucky and Krishtalka (1990), Thewissen (1990), Theodor et al. (2007).

Krishtalka 1990Distinguished from all species of Bunophorus by hyperinflation of P4/4 (in proportion to Ml/1) and lingual area ofM1-3; strong cingulid on M3• Additionally: unlike B. robustus, B. grangeri and B. pattersoni (most), P4 paraconid absent, M1_3 paraconid vestigial or absent; differs from B. sinclairi in lacking a metaconid on P4 and pericone, hypocone and isolated metaconule on M1- 2 , and retaining a complete, distinct cristid obliqua on M1_3 •
