Hippopotamus hipponensis was named by Gaudry (1867). Its type specimen is 1.

It was recombined as Hippopotamus (Hexaprotodon) hipponensis by Arambourg (1979); it was recombined as Hexaprotodon hipponensis by Coryndon (1977) and Weston and Boisserie (2010).
