Sethocorys was named by Haeckel (1882) [2a. Tribe: Sethocorida. Open eradiate dyocyrtids. A. Sethocorida with a girdle = Lophophaenida (Sethocorida with a smooth or truncate apertural margin). AII. Acute (with cephalis spiny, not smooth). IIa. With the second segment ovate and the aperture constricted. a+ With a single cephalic spine. (Translated from Latin by E.M.R. and W.R.R.)]. It is extant. It was considered monophyletic by Haeckel (1882).

It was assigned to Radiolaria by Haeckel (1882).
