Taxonomy
Rhizostomites was named by Haeckel (1866) [Sepkoski's age data: J Tith-l]. It is the type genus of Rhizostomitidae.

It was assigned to Rhizostomitidae by Bayer et al. (1956); to Lithorhizostomatida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Metazoa by Mayoral et al. (2004).
