Pterophyllum distans was named by Morris (1863). It is not extant. Its type locality is Ghutiari, Rajmahal Hills, which is in a Jurassic fluvial-lacustrine horizon in India.
It was recombined as Nilssonia distans by Sharma (1969) and Lakhanpal et al. (1976).
