Taxonomy
Limnocyon protenus was named by Cope (1874). Its type locality is Arroyo Blanco (Cope), which is in a Wasatchian terrestrial horizon in the San Jose Formation of New Mexico.
It was recombined as Viverravus protenus by Hay (1902); it was recombined as Didymictis protenus by Cope (1875), Scott (1892), Matthew (1909), Matthew and Granger (1915), Matthew (1937), Polly (1997), Gunnell (1998).
