Arctomys richardsonii was named by Sabine (1822). It is extant.

It was recombined as Citellus richardsonii by Gazin (1930); it was recombined as Spermophilus richardsonii by Kurten and Anderson (1980); it was recombined as Urocitellus richardsonii by Helgen et al. (2009).
