Taxonomy
Sciurus jeffersoni was named by Douglass (1902) [also said to be 1902]. It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Pipestone Springs, which is in a Chadronian terrestrial claystone in the Renova Formation of Montana.
It was recombined as Prosciurus jeffersoni by Matthew (1909), Wood (1937); it was recombined as Cedromus jeffersoni by Wood (1962), Wood (1980); it was recombined as Protosciurus jeffersoni by Black (1965), Storer (1978), Emry and Thorington (1982); it was recombined as Douglassciurus jeffersoni by Emry and Korth (2001); it was recombined as Douglassia jeffersoni by Emry and Korth (1996), Tabrum and Nichols (2001).
