Palinurus muensteri was named by Voltz (1835).

It was misspelled as Glyphea munsteri by Schweitzer et al. (2010); it was recombined as Glyphea muensteri by von Meyer (1840), Étallon (1859), Feldmann et al. (2015) and Chény et al. (2023).
