Megalaspis (Plesiomegalaspis) was named by Thoral (1946) [Sepkoski's age data: O Aren-l Sepkoski's reference number: 565].

It was Kayseraspis (Plesiomegalaspis) by Jaanusson (1956); it was synonymized subjectively with Megalaspidella by Harrington et al. (1959); it was reranked as Plesiomegalaspis by Sepkoski (2002); it was synonymized subjectively with Asaphellus by Fortey and Owens (1987) and Jell and Adrain (2002).

It was assigned to Megalaspis by Thoral (1946); to Kayseraspis by Jaanusson (1956); and to Asaphida by Sepkoski (2002).
