Moianella cervantesi was named by Ossó and Domínguez (2021) [Made available by Ossó & Domínguez 2021]. Its type specimen is MGB 59624, a carapace, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Near the village of Moià, which is in a Priabonian reef, buildup or bioherm reef rocks in Spain. It is the type species of Moianella.
It was considered a nomen nudum by Ossó and Domínguez (2013), Schweitzer and Feldmann (2019), Ossó and Domínguez (2019).
