Lobonotus sommarugai was named by Beschin et al. (2009). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Parona, Eocene, which is in a Priabonian marine marl in the Priabona Marl Formation of Italy.
It was recombined as Pyreneplax sommarugai by Ossó et al. (2014).
