Taxonomy
Cancer macrochelus was named by Desmarest (1822). It is the type species of Palaeocarpilius.
It was recombined as Palaeocarpilius macrocheilus by Bittner (1875), Bittner (1883), Lörenthey (1898), Schweitzer (2003) and Schweitzer et al. (2010); it was recombined as Palaeocarpilius macrochelus by Beschin et al. (2006), Beschin and De Angeli (2008), De Angeli and Caporiondo (2009), Busulini et al. (2012) and Schweitzer et al. (2018).
It was recombined as Palaeocarpilius macrocheilus by Bittner (1875), Bittner (1883), Lörenthey (1898), Schweitzer (2003) and Schweitzer et al.
