Taxonomy
Gestemys powelli was named by de la Fuente et al. (2022). Its type specimen is IBIGEO-P 107, a partial skeleton (A nearly complete skull, lower jaw and a partially preserved carapace and plastron with some appendicular remains inside.), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is near San Antonio de los Cobres, which is in an Eocene lacustrine - small sandstone in the Geste Formation of Argentina. It is the type species of Gestemys.

Diagnosis
Reference | Diagnosis | |
---|---|---|
M. S. de la Fuente et al. 2022 | Gestemys powelli differs from other podocnemidids in: possessing a huge foramen palatinum posterius; its short pterygoid flange does not reach the basisphenoid suture, allowing the cavum pterygoid to be exposed; the triturating surface of the lower jaw is relatively narrow, so that it ends in an extremely tapered symphysis; and the area articularis mandibularis is flat. Another diagnostic feature is the sagittal profile of the carapace, which displays a noticeable outline angle change at the level of the eighth costal and suprapygal bones where the posterior end of the shell descends abruptly. Regarding the plastron, its short and sub quadrangular anterior plastral lobe is twice as wide as it is long, and a punctual contact between the gular scute and humero-pectoral sulcus prevents midline contact of the humeral scutes. |
