Taxonomy
Necrocarcinus woodwardii was named by Bell (1863).

It was corrected as Necrocarcinus woodwardi by van Straelen (1936), Schweitzer et al. (2010) and Karasawa et al. (2014); it was recombined as Elektrocarcinus woodwardi by Schweitzer et al. (2016).
