Taxonomy
Necrocarcinus ovalis was named by Stenzel (1945). It is the type species of Protonecrocarcinus.

It was recombined as Paranecrocarcinus ovalis by Schweitzer et al. (2010); it was recombined as Protonecrocarcinus ovalis by Schweitzer et al. (2016) and Schweitzer et al. (2018).
