Yavanna chimaerica
Discussion
The specific epithet derives from the latin word Chimaera, a creature from the Greek Mythology, which was a mixture of a lion, a goat and a snake. The name is proposed in reference to the mixture of features of different tree ferns observed in the species. Mentioned as Cyatheaceous stem by Césari et al. (2001)
Taxonomy
Yavanna chimaerica was named by Vera (2013). Its type specimen is BA Pb 14981 (BA Pb Pm 597-607), a stem (a central stem (1-5.7 cm wide) surrounded by adventitious roots and helically distributed persistent petiole bases), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Domo Rotch - Livingston Island, which is in an Aptian terrestrial conglomerate/shale in the Cerro Negro Formation of Antarctica. It is the type species of Yavanna.

E. I. Vera 2013 | Fossil tree fern stem with attached petiole bases and adventitious roots. Internally, presenting a solenostele and accessory medullary bundles, both surrounded by a sclerenchyma sheath. Pith and cortex parenchymatous, the latter enclosed by the hypodermis. Proximal petiole bases vascularized by one corrugated meristele, arranged in a modified omega-shaped structure, with a pair of deep lateral constrictions. Distal petiole bases with three meristeles, resulting from the division of the single meristele in two adaxial arcs and one abaxial arc. Corrugations of vascular strands of the petiole base due to the repetition of V-shaped units. Adventitious roots protostelic, with internal parenchymatic and external sclerenchymatic cortex. |
