Gerastos hammii was named by Gibb and Chatterton (2010) [= 2000 Gerastos Fortey, p. 180 (top left).
= 2004 Rhenocynproetus sp. n. 1 Basse and Müller, pl. 21, fig. 271.]. Its type specimen is UA13538 (complete exoskeleton) and is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Ceratarges Horizon, Saredrar, which is in an Emsian/Eifelian open shallow subtidal limestone in the El Otfal Formation of Morocco.
