Discussion

Both the generic and the specific name refer to the Mokle-mbmb, a water-dwelling mythological creature from Central Africa, generally associated with a reptilian form, and usually characterized by the presence of a relatively long neck, this being a common character for Pleurodira.

Taxonomy
Mokelemys was named by Pérez-García (2022). Its type is Mokelemys mbembe.

It was assigned to Erymnochelyini by Pérez-García (2022).

Pérez-García 2022Member of Erymnochelyini characterized by the following exclusive combination of cranial characters: subtriangular interparietal scute, reaching at least the anterior level of the temporal emargination; absence of interorbital longitudinal depression; relatively well developed temporal emarginations, only generating the partial roofing of the fossae temporalis; dorsally directed orbits; absence of medial premaxillary hook; wider than tall nares; height of the suborbital space similar to that of the orbits; high cheek emarginations, reaching at least half the height of the orbits; greatly reduced to absent ventral midline depression on the premaxillae; single accessory ridge on the palatal surface of the maxilla; very broad biting surface at the mandibular symphysis; lateral surface of the dentaries partially exposed in dorsal view; welldeveloped medial accessory ridge on each triturating surface of the lower jaw.
