Orohippus uintensis was named by Marsh (1875). It is a 3D body fossil.

It was synonymized subjectively with Epihippus gracilis by Granger (1908), Peterson (1932), Scott (1945), Gazin (1956), Forsten (1971), Hanson (1996); it was recombined as Epihippus uintensis by King (1878), Scott and Osborn (1887), Osborn (1890), Matthew (1899), Hay (1902), Matthew (1909), Hay (1930), MacFadden (1980), McCarroll et al. (1996), MacFadden (1998).
