Cervus lucasi was named by Hay (1927). Its type specimen is USNM 11605, a partial skeleton, and it is a 3D body fossil.
It was considered a nomen dubium by Kurten and Anderson (1980); it was recombined as Odocoileus lucasi by Morejohn and Dailey (2004).
