Eumys cricetodontoides was named by White (1954). Its type locality is Canyon Ferry Reservoir 24LC15, which is in an Orellan terrestrial horizon in Montana.

It was synonymized subjectively with Eumys elegans by Setoguchi (1978), Martin (1980).
