Cytheromatinae was named by Elofson (1939). It is extant. Its type is Cytheroma.

It was reranked as the family Cytheromatidae by Liebau (2005).

It was assigned to Paradoxostomatidae by Benson et al. (1961); and to Paradoxostomatoidea by Liebau (2005).
