Taxonomy
Proetus swallowi was named by Shumard (1855).

It was recombined as Phillipsia swallowi by Herrick (1887); it was recombined as Breviphillipsia swallowi by Hessler (1963); it was misspelled as Proetus swallovi by Keyes (1894); it was recombined as Comptonaspis swallowi by Brezinski (2000).
