Perexigupyge gerki was named by Brezinski (1988). Its type specimen is CMNH 34427, a cephalon/head (cranidium), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Hodges Quarry, which is in a Tournaisian carbonate limestone in the Gilmore City Limestone Formation of Iowa.
