Dicotyles antiquus was named by Marsh (1870).

It was recombined as Perchoerus (Dicotyles) antiquus by Marsh (1893); it was recombined as Perchoerus antiquus by Hay (1902) and Simpson (1930); it was recombined as Hesperhys antiquus by Tedford and Hunter (1984) and Emry and Eshelman (1998).
