Sphenophyllum gondwanensis was named by Singh et al. (1986). It is not extant. Its type locality is Lalmatia Incline Colliery, Rajmahal Hills, which is in an Artinskian/Kungurian fluvial-lacustrine horizon in the Barakar Formation of India.
