Taxonomy
Anchitherium (Hypohippus) affinis was named by Leidy (1858) [type of subgenus Hypohippus]. It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is TMM 40282, which is in a Clarendonian terrestrial horizon in Texas. It is the type species of Hypohippus.

It was recombined as Hypohippus affinis by Leidy (1858), Leidy (1869), Hay (1902), Gidley (1907), Osborn (1918), Stirton (1940), Forsten (1975) and MacFadden (1998).

A. -M. Forsten 1975Leidy (1858), according to Gidley (1907), revised: cheek teeth brachyodont, lophodont. Uppers with metaloph united to ectoloph, slight protoconule, metaconule submerged; protocone and hypocone large, conical; paracone and metacone concave, no ribbing; crochet variable, disconnected; hypostyle variable.. Lowers with metaconid and metastylid divided by a notch in the premolars, barely divided or undivided in the molars. Cingulum variable, cement none. M3/3 relatively reduced.
