Palaeopycnogonides was named by Charbonnier et al. (2007). Its type is Palaeopycnogonides gracilis. It is the type genus of Palaeopycnogonididae.
It was assigned to Ammotheidae by Dunlop et al. (2020); and to Palaeopycnogonididae by Sabroux et al. (2023).
