The epithet diminutus refers to the small overall size of the grains.

Taxonomy
Ailanthipites diminutus was named by De Benedetti et al. (2023). Its type specimen is MPEF-PA 608, a microspore, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Cañadón del Irupé, which is in a Cretaceous/Paleocene marginal marine siliciclastic/siliciclastic in Argentina.

Exine 1–2 μm thick, semitectate, suprastriateinframicroreticulate. Muri ca. 0.15–0.25 μm wide, longitudinal, subparallel, dichotomous, anastomosed, closely spaced. Lumina <0.3 μm diameter.
