Discussion

The epithet feruglioi honors the distinguished Italian geologist Egidio Feruglio, who spent most of his career in Argentina.

Taxonomy
Ailanthipites feruglioi was named by De Benedetti et al. (2023). Its type specimen is MPEF-PA 803, a microspore, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Paleoazolla type locality, Cerro Buitre, which is in a Maastrichtian terrestrial horizon in the La Colonia Formation of Argentina.

F. De Benedetti et al. 2023Pollen grain tricolporate, oblate to oblate spheroidal. Colpi long, extended nearly to the poles, with margo, pores diffuse. Exine ca. 1–2 μm thick, semitectate, suprastriate-inframicroreticulate. Muri ca. 0.2–0.3 μm wide, longitudinal, subparallel, dichotomous, anastomosed, closely spaced, rounded in cross section, psilate. Lumina <0.5 μm diameter.
