Aplodontia alexandrae was named by Furlong (1910). Its type locality is Virgin Valley, which is in a Barstovian terrestrial horizon in the Virgin Valley Formation of Nevada.
It was recombined as Liodontia alexandrae by Miller and Gidley (1918), Gazin (1932), Wilson (1937), Shotwell (1958) and Shotwell (1968).
