Derivation of name. Gr. aqa archaios, from the beginning. With reference to the fact that this seems to be the oldest species of the genus.
Taxonomy
Ameghinocythere archaios was named by Ceolin et al. (2015). Its type specimen is LM-FCEN 3436, a carapace, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Cerro Azul CA 21, which is in a Danian marine siltstone in the Jagüel Formation of Argentina.
