Diagnosis
ReferenceDiagnosis
T. M. Richards et al. 2023Large tropeognathine pterodactyloid with the
following apomorphies: dorsal surface of mandibular rostrum flat; occluding palatal surface of maxillary rostrum flat; third and sixth pair of alveoli largest in the maxillary and mandibular toothrows, and subequal in size; dentary alveoli 6 through 13 positioned laterally on the mandible; alveoli 3 through 12 positioned laterally on the maxillary rostrum; dentary and maxillary interalveolar distance increase gradually in size up to the sixth alveolus; large increase in interalveolar distance between seventh and eighth alveoli on both maxillary and mandibular rostrum (almost double the length of preceding interalveolar distance between sixth and seventh alveoli). Thapunngaka shawi can be further distinguished from other anhanguerians by the following combination of char- acters: deep, ‘blade-like’ asymmetrical sagittal crest on the mandible with a gently concave rostral margin; mandibular and maxillary crests beginning at the rostral tip of the rostrum; very slight lateral expansion of the rostral part of the maxillary and mandibular rostra; anteriormost portion of the maxillary and mandibular rostra directed dorsally when viewed laterally (begin- ning between the fourth and fifth alveoli).
