Taxonomy
Megaceratops acer was named by Cope (1873). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Horsetail Creek, which is in a Chadronian terrestrial horizon in the White River Formation of Colorado.
It was recombined as Symborodon acer by Cope (1873), Cope (1875), Hay (1902) and Osborn (1902); it was recombined as Titanotherium acer by Osborn (1896); it was recombined as Megacerops acer by Osborn (1929), Galbreath (1953) and Mader (1989); it was considered a nomen dubium by Mader (1998).
