Megalonyx leidyi was named by Lindahl (1892). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Hammann Gravel Pit, which is in an Irvingtonian terrestrial gravel in the McPherson Formation of Kansas.
It was synonymized subjectively with Megalonyx jeffersonii by Kurten and Anderson (1980).
