Cytheropsis rugosa was named by Jones (1858) [Cytherella? rugosa].

It was recombined as Primitia rugosa by Jones and Holl (1868); it was recombined as Cytherella rugosa by Jones (1891); it was recombined as Macronotella rugosa by Kay (1940); it was recombined as Punctaparchites rugosus by Swain et al. (1961).
