Meniscomys hippodus was named by Cope (1878) [genotype; also said to be 1878]. It is the type species of Meniscomys.
It was recombined as Protogaulus hippodus by Riggs (1899); it was recombined as Allomys hippodus by Hay (1902), Stock (1935).
