Indigia eleganta was named by Barchatova (1973). Its type specimen is TsGM 6/10315, a shell, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Belaya River, Sakmarian, Northern Timan Mountains, which is in a Sakmarian marine horizon in the Russian Federation.
