Mesodectes was named by Cope (1875). Its type is Isacis caniculus.

It was synonymized subjectively with Ictops by Gazin (1949); it was synonymized subjectively with Leptictis by Van Valen (1967) and Novacek (1976).

It was assigned to Leptictidae by Hay (1902); and to Leptictinae by Hay (1930).
