(Amiiformes, Halecomorphi), but our revision shows that this assignment was due to misinterpretation of some cranial bones (e.g., rostral, jaws, circumorbital and opercular series). Our study of Plesiofuro shows that this taxon lacks the derived features of the Halecomorphi or even crown-group Neopterygii. It is placed on the Neopterygii stem but cannot be classified in any known family (see Discussion below)." |
